Where do dreams go? Are they really lost if they are not fulfilled? Do they transform and develop? And if they do come true, do they lose their magic? Would it take away your drive to keep going?
I once had a dream, to walk in the mountains, so we booked a holiday in the Alps and walked down from a mountain (somebody should have told me that it is harder than walking up!). It was magnificent, and I took lots of beautiful pictures. Unfortunately, I had not trained for it and was not fit enough. It took my knees a whole year to recover. And my dream? Suffice it to say that I have not had an urge to go to the mountains since then.
To me, this seems to suggest that the saying is true: it is better to travel than to arrive – the same as ‘happiness is the journey not the destination’. Wouldn’t it make much more sense to enjoy the trip than make it hard work, spending much of your hard-earned cash to get to somewhere that exists in your dreams, your imagination, the reality of which may be disappointing? Wouldn’t it be much more fun to appreciate the ever changing scenery and people you meet along the way, than to know, once your dream is fulfilled it is over? Or, what would happen if you didn’t arrive, if your dream is not fulfilled? All that time, effort, money and hard work wasted, making you resentful and bitter!?
Dreams keep us going – so dream on, they may come true one day. But don’t forget how important it is to enjoy the ride and travel ‘in style’.
